A Game of Two Halves as AC Come Back to Win a Thriller

Musselburgh Athletic  3   AC Oxgangs  4

Squad
Shaun, Callum C, Callum B, Stuart, Kieran, Brodie, Dylan, Cillian, Max, Zac, Kyle

Scorers
Brodie, Callum B. (2), Stuart (2)

ACO Man of the Match
With our second-half performance this MoTM gave us quite a headache. Having finally all agreed, we decided that our MoTM today goes to Callum B. with some excellent defending and covering for team mates. Callum demonstrated some excellent decision making and also bravery when going for the ball. This allowed him to grab two goals himself from corners. Well done Callum B.

It's a footballing cliché to talk about a game of two halves, but sometimes no other description of a game is suitable.  ACO continued their pre-season schedule with an early-morning visit to Olivebank Stadium in Musselburgh, a large pitch but perfect playing surface and much better conditions than the previous week's fixture against Pumpherston.

ACO started well in an experimental 5-3-2 wing-back formation, passing the ball freely, forcing Musselburgh back with good pressure on their defence, and Kyle had a shot just wide.  Musselburgh then started to dominate, with Shaun called into action to tip a long shot round the post.  ACO were being driven back, sitting very deep, and couldn't clear from a corner, and the ball was in the ACO net to put Musselburgh 1-0 up.

ACO rallied briefly, with some good play from Kyle, Sean and Max leading to Brodie having two attempts on goal, but ACO were struggling to get the ball out to the wingers. Any through balls that managed to breach the Musselburgh defence were being anticipated well by the Musselburgh keeper, who was playing more of a sweeper role. Musselburgh finished the half strongly with two quick goals. The first was a great top-corner finish after ACO didn't close down a cross. Then they finished the first half 3-0 up from a long ball down the right wing into space, and another calm finish.

Half-time 3-0

For the second half, ACO reverted to 4-4-2, and immediately signalled their intentions with a great through ball from Zac to Kieran, but the defence got back to cover before he could get a shot away.  ACO were now putting more pressure on the Musselburgh defence, and their keeper couldn't repeat his first-half sweeper position.  Sean had a couple of attempts on target, and Brodie had the ball in the back of the net, but the ref had already blown for a handball.  Stuart had a point-blank shot saved well by the keeper.  ACO were getting the ball forward much more, and using Kyle's pace down the wing.  Eventually this paid off, with a great run from Kyle causing confusion in the defence, and Brodie calmly looped the ball over the keeper to grab a goal back.

The ACO defence still had plenty of work to do though.  Shaun had to make a great reaction save after a corner wasn't cleared, and Callum B, Callum C, Dylan and Cillian all had to be organised, and were covering each other's positions really well.  At the other end, ACO grabbed another goal back as Max's corner sailed through to the back post for Callum B to finish.  They nearly grabbed another when Kyle's shot rolled agonisingly wide of the post.

ACO then equalised from another corner, with Sean's excellent delivery into the box and Callum B finishing again after the ball wasn't cleared.  ACO nearly scored again, with Callum C's long shot going just wide, and Kieran was an inch away from tapping it in at the far post.

A draw would have been a fair result after an entertaining game, but ACO grabbed a winner right at the end after another great run from Kyle into the box.  He was brought down and the ref gave a penalty!  Stuart stepped up and placed the shot into the bottom corner, but only just, as the keeper reached the ball and almost managed to keep it out.

Full-Time 3-4

Coaches Message:
Excellent comeback against a strong Musselburgh side. We all agreed that we got off to a slow start. We needed to up the pace, find players quicker and use communication to help us move the ball. The second-half was a lot better, the passing was quicker, the skill levels were where we needed them and the finishing was good too. Well done on an excellent comeback. Let's start the next game at the level of the second-half next time.
